Engr. Sangalang selected as Participant in the Taiwan Faculty Immersion Program

The Board of Investments (BOI) of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is currently implementing the Integrated Circuit Design (IC Design) Roadmap. Together with the Philippine Institute of Integrated Circuits (PIIC) under the University of the Philippines Electrical and Electronics Engineering Institute (UP-EEEI) and the National Sun Yat-Sen University (NSYSU) in Taiwan, they will be conducting a Faculty Immersion project in Taiwan. This project will be sending qualified Filipino faculty and engineers for immersion in the National Sun Yat-Sen University to (1) identify work on research areas for collaboration; (2) help local universities, through identified partners in Taiwan, to define their research focus; and (3) help the Philippines identify Taiwan’s success as one of the world’s leaders in industrial research and innovation.

The goal of the roadmap is to position the Philippines as a key player in the global IC Design Industry ecosystem and to sustain and rejuvenate the Philippines’ future economic growth in Semiconductor and Electronics by revamping the local supply chain of the IC Design Industry be accelerating the demand for IC Designers in the country through innovative excellence. One of the strategies in the roadmap is to develop the capabilities of the Filipino IC Designers in the country.

Being an active partner with PIIC, the university is selected as one of partner university to send their nomination for the immersion project. The university nominated Engr. Ralph Gerard B. Sangalang, ECE Program Coordinator of the university, for participation to this immersion project. After some selection process Engr. Sangalang and two other faculties; from Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Science and Technology (MSU-IIT) and Technological University of the Philippines (TUP), were selected to participate in the said immersion project.

The Faculty Immersion project is hosted by the National Sun Yat-Sen University under the guidance of ASE Chair Professor Chua-Chin Wang of the Department of Electrical Engineering, VLSI Laboratory. The project is a 3-month immersion program (September 1, 2017 to November 30, 2017) wherein the selected participants are expected to design an integrated circuit that is to be given by Professor Wang.

On his return, Engr. Sangalang will be conducting an echo seminar to the students and faculty to share his learnings during the immersion program. It is also expected of him, to improve existing courses relating to IC Design in the university.
