BatStateU hailed champion in the 12th SWEEP Innovations and Excellence Awards
After six years of making it into the top 10 of the SWEEP Innovations and Excellence Awards, a team of BS ECE Students from the Batangas State University finally grabbed this year’s coveted grand price. Their entry, Pinoy Extra, bested more than 300 venture from different universities in the Philippines. This year had the biggest number of entries for the said competition.
The team, mentored by Engr. Albertson D. Amante, faculty researcher and Head of BatStateU Center for Technopreneurship and Innovation together with BS ECE Students namely Aldrin Abacan, Ryza Mae Mercado, JC Aquino and Poncy Reyes started conceptualizing the idea last August 2014. From the 300 entries, it was trimmed down to 20, the top 10 of which was determined after a panel interview via skype. From November to February, the team started developing their Minimum Viable Product (MVP) and validating it to the market. The awarding and pitching event took place last February 11, 2016 at the Green Sun Makati.
The team won a trophy and Php 300,000.00. BatStateU will also receive half of the prize in the form of a grant to fine tune the start-up. Pinoy Extra Team also grabbed the Ericsson Networked Society Award giving them an extra Php25,000.00 cash prize.
Pinoy Extra, an online solution that aims to link those who have no time to accomplish important tasks but are willing to pay and those who have the time and the skill to accomplish the task at a certain price. The application connects to busy individuals to get their chores done. Provides opportunities for part-timers or earn an extra.
The SWEEP Awards is the biggest and longest-running competition that recognizes the most innovative devices and wireless applications that make use of SMART’s wireless technologies. It is a key initiative under SWEEP, the first-of-its-kind partnership between the telco industry and the academe that hopes to help enhance the quality of engineering and IT education in the country.
