Batangas State University’s Adaptive Capacity-building and Technology Innovation for Occupational Hazards and Natural Disasters (ACTION) Center collaborates with the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and the National University of Kaoshing(NUK) to host this year’s ASEAN Conference and Exposition on Disaster Risk Management and Climate Change Adaptation (ACEDRMCCA) to commence on July 25-27 at Pablo Borbon Main I Campus, Batangas City.
This international conference carries the theme “Converging with the ASEAN Community in Managing Disaster Risks and Climate Change for a Resilient Community”. It aims to open opportunities for communication to discuss developing issues, international and local policies on disaster risk management and climate change adaptation among local and international DRM staff, officials, researchers and scholars.
It also aims to raise public awareness on Disaster Risk Management (DRM) that will help communities in reducing the effects of hazards in our community.
DRM experts from the local and international scene will share their knowledge, experiences and best practices in handling the increasing risk of natural and man-made disasters.
The conference’s guest keynote speaker is Undersecretary Ricardo B. Jalad. He is the Executive Director for the Office for Civil Defense Administrator and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
Several speakers from the local DRM community will also grace the event including Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation Department of Science and Technology Undersecretary Renato Solidum, Jr., Climate Change Commission Secretary Emmanuel De Guzman, Office of Civil Defense – Rehabilitation and Recovery Management Office Director Edgar Posadas, Albay 2nd District Representative Joey Salceda, and University of the Philippines – Manila’s Health Emergencies and Disasters (HEAD) Study Group Dr. Emelia Santamaria.
Meanwhile, Malaysia also has a share of speakers, which include the UTM Dean of Research Dr. Zulkifi Yusof, Dr. Nor Eliza Alias from the UTM Department of Hydraulics and Hydrology, the Research Group Head of UTM’sStructural Earthquake Engineering Research (SEER)Dr. Azlan Adnan, and UTM Technology and Informatics Faculty Member Lt. Col. Mohamad Fazli Sardi.
Furthermore, Taiwan representatives will also grace the event to share their expertise and experiences on DRM including Kaoshiung City Government Disaster Management Office Executive Secretary I-Chuan Liu, Director of New Energy and Electricity Development (NEED) Center and NUK Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (DCEE) Professor and Vice PresidentDr. Hsing-Lung Lien, Director of Science and Technology Center for Disaster Prevention and Reduction and NUK DCEE Associate Professor and Department Chair Dr. Min-Hao Wu, and National Chiayi University Department of Civil and Water Resources Engineering Professor and Department Chair Dr. Chien-Yuam Chen.
The ACTION Center is composed of the Disaster Risk Education for Adaptation and Mitigation (DREAM) Academy, which is a training facility that offers Diploma and Masters Programs for Disaster Risk Management. It also includes the Innovative Advanced Computing and Technology (IACT) that serves as the research and development division responsible for harnessing science and technology solutions on Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation (DRR-CCA).
