The Batangas State University is now open for admissions in its Disaster Resiliency Education for Adaptation and Mitigation (DREAM) Academy. The establishment of the Academy was approved by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) on December 19, 2017.
As a part of BatStateU’s Adaptive Capacity-building and Technology Innovation for Occupational-Hazards and Natural Disaster (ACTION) Center, DREAM Academy offers two (2) programs: the Master’s Degree in Disaster Risk Management, and the Diploma in the same field. A first in the region, the Academy aims to professionalize the practice of Disaster Risk Reduction Management (DRRM), and equip DRRM managers and personnel with the skills and competencies demanded by their profession.
The Diploma in Disaster Risk Management is a one-year course, composed of 18 units in total while the Master’s Degree (Non-thesis) is a two-year program with 36 total units. The two (2) programs are ladderized, wherein the completion of the diploma program entitles the student to pursue and finish the master’s program with full credit of the academic units earned from the former. A student, however, may enroll to complete the master’s program without obtaining the diploma. In the same manner, a student may enroll in the diploma without pursuing the master’s program afterwards.
Both programs will allow students to gain knowledge and expertise on disaster risk management; to address problems and gaps in the mitigation of hazards; to implement preparedness programs, activities and projects; and to organize communities to become safe and resilient.
The offering of the programs was endorsed to the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) by the Regional Development Council on September 14 at the Summit Ridge Hotel, Tagaytay City. Functioning as the steering committee of DREAM Academy, the Multi-Sectoral Advisory Council (MSAC) was formed, which is composed of the Region IV-A Offices of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Office of Civil Defense (OCD), Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) and other provincial agencies.
Among the partners of DREAM Academy on bringing quality education are BatStateU’s international partners. These are National University of Kaohsiung (NUK) of Taiwan and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) of Malaysia. Part of the faculty members of DREAM Academy are visiting professors from these universities abroad.
Together with DREAM Academy, another component of the ACTION Center is the Innovative Advanced Computing and Technology (IACT), which serves as the research and development division responsible for harnessing science and technology solutions on Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation (DRR-CCA).
Enrollment starts on January 3, 2018 while classes shall commence on January 20. For details, applicants may call (043) 980-0385 loc. 1236, or visit the CABEIHM Graduate School of Public Administration, Pablo Borbon Main 1, Rizal Avenue, Batangas City.
